Many homes built before 1980 contain asbestos in old floor tiles, ceiling tiles, roof shingles and flashing, siding, insulation (around boilers, furnaces, ducts, pipes, sheeting, fireplaces), pipe cement, and even joint compound used on seams between pieces of sheetrock. Some newer houses may also contain Asbestos-Containing materials.

Of course, each home is different, and one of the main determining factors is the age of the home. The older the home, the more likely that it contains Abestos Containing Materials (ACM).  Some places are more obvious then others. You can spend some time in our "Asbestos in Your Home" section to see if anything looks familiar. However, don't assume that your material doesn't contain asbestos just because it is not shown in these photos. It is always best to have the material sampled and tested.

Caution: Asbestos is only harmful when it is "disturbed". Collecting a sample to take to a lab will cause a "fiber release" if the material you are sampling contains asbestos. Since that's what you are trying to find out, it's best to leave this process up to a licensed professional.
