The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is the governing body that licenses asbestos inspectors.
Inspectors
are required to identify asbestos-containing materials by sampling
"suspect" materials discovered during an inspection. In accordance with
the Asbestos Abatement Act and Code, the IDPH shall license persons
desiring to serve as supervisors, inspectors, management planners,
project designers, project managers, and air sampling professionals in
public and nonpublic school facilities.
In
accordance with the Commercial and Public Building Asbestos Abatement
Act and Code, only the supervisors, inspectors and project designers
are required to be licensed by the IDPH to perform project activities
in commercial and public buildings. Licensure is required for persons
performing project activities in excess of 3 square feet or 3 linear
feet.
Of course, your home is not a "public
building" or a school, but rest easy knowing that your asbestos
inspection will be performed by an IDPH licensed inspector.
Asbestos
inspections are not "Home Inspections". Usually, a home inspector has
minimal training regarding the identification of potential
asbestos-containing material. At most, a home inspector will list on
their report that the home has "suspect material" and the location.
Only an Asbestos Inspector is licensed to collect a sample and have the
material analyzed by a laboratory to find out for sure.
